Majel Barrett Roddenberry: 1932-2008

majel barrett roddenberry, beloved star of sci-fi miracle star trek, passed away early this morning surrounded by house and friends. roddenberry was 76 years broken-down. she began her acting vocation in the 1950’s with roles in such popular shows as “leave it to beaver,” “bonanza” and “the lucy manifest; but it was her numerous roles in the legendary incomparable trek franchise that fans came to know and affection her. roddenberry had featured roles in all but every star trek television and film entity and became an iconic figure within the fan community.

Her roles included Nurse Chapel in Star Trek: The Original Series, Lt. M’ress in Star Trek: The Animated Series, Lwaxana Troi in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, and the voice of the USS Enterprise computer in almost every incarnation of the series, including lots of video games. However, it was the love affair between her and the late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry that earned her the title “The First Lady of Star Trek.” Over the course of their more then quarter-century love affair, she became not only Gene’s partner, but also his creative muse. Majel helped Gene expand the Star Trek universe and was an integral part of its continued legacy after his death, working on Earth: Final Conflict and Andromeda, as well as appearing in Babylon 5 levitra, Family Guy, and the Spider-Man animated series.

Majel recently completed reprising her role as the voice of the USS Enterprise for J.J. Abrams’ new Star Trek film.

The fire trucks are pulling in again at 36th and Lexington. Around the World in a Solar Car

Louis Palmer has driven 32,000 miles through 38 countries in 17 months to become the first person to circumnavigate the globe in a solar car.

The 36-year-old Swiss school teacher pulled up to the U.N. climate talks in Poznan, Poland, where representatives from almost 200 countries hope to hammer out a new treaty to address climate change. Palmer didn’t burn any petroleum during his ’round the world drive, and says the car “ran like a Swiss watch,” proving solar is a viable transportation technology.

“These new technologies are ready,” said Palmer. “The car is ecological, economical and absolutely reliable.”

The three-wheeled ” Solar Taxi” can reach 55 mph and has a range of 185 miles. It seats two people comfortably and saw just two breakdowns during the trip. Palmer offered rides to thousands of people, including U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, along the way to promote solar power and raise awareness about global warming.

Swiss scientists worked with Palmer to build the three-wheeler. It’s driven by an electric motor powered by a molten salt batterycharged by a solar array hauled on a trailer (a cord plugged into a wall outlet). The car weighs 1,100 pounds and is made of aluminum and fiberglass to maximize performance.

Palmer told the BBCthe Solar Taxi cost “as much as two Ferraris” to build but figures it could be mass-produced for about $12,620, although the solar panels would cost another six grand. Still, that isn’t much less than the next-generation Honda Insight will go for.

That prompted Palmer to challenge the auto industry to develop a solar car.

“People love this idea of a solar car,” he said outside the U.N. climate talks. “I hope that the car industry hears … and makes electric cars in the future.”

Next year Palmer plans to go around the world in 80 days in six alt-fuel vehicles that draw power from renewable sources like hydro, geothermal and wind.
