Oswego hockey players receive awards at SUNY Canton

Oswego’s Mark Talamo and Scott Zaryski were each honored recently at SUNY Canton.Both were captains of the hockey team and led the Kangaroos into the semifinals of the NJCAA national tournament, hosted by SUNY Canton.Talamo received the Alden C. Chadwick Memorial Leadership Award at the Student-Athlete Awards Banquet recently at SUNY Canton.This award is given to a student who excels both as a leader in the classroom and as an athlete.Talamo’s leadership ability was also recognized by his selection as MVP of the SUNY Canton hockey team, and the Offensive MVP. He finished with 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points.He was an NJCAA All-Region selection.“He excels in the classroom and he excels on the ice, but most important, he excels as a great person and friend among his teammates,” Coach Eric McCambly said. “He leads by example and never stops trying to improve himself and the team.“As captain, he treats each player with the utmost respect. How he carries himself is a role model for those around him.”Talamo is a liberal arts and science major. He carries a 3.73 grade-point average, which has earned him NJCAA Academic All-America honors.He volunteers on the Student-Athlete Advisory Board, and has been selected for the past two years as a North Country Academic Scholarship winner. Talamo is also an officer of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He is planning to continue at Canton with a business/finance major.He resides in Oswego with his parents Matthew and Margaret Talamo.Zaryski was named the team’s Defensive MVP. He led SUNY Canton defensemen in scoring with 10 goals and five assists for 15 points. He was a first-team NJCAA All-American, and made the all-tournament team at the national championships.Another player from Oswego contributing for the Kangaroos was freshman defenseman Ryan Cooley. He recorded one assist this season.SUNY Canton finished 16-10-2 overall.
